01. What should we wear for our family portrait session?
Choose two or three coordinating colors in the same family — think soft neutrals, earth tones, or muted pastels — rather than matchy-matchy outfits, and let textures like knits, linen, denim, and flowy fabrics do the heavy lifting (they photograph beautifully and add depth). A great trick is to start with one outfit you love (often mom's dress) and build everyone else's around it, sprinkling one accent color across the family in small ways like a scarf, tie, or hair bow. Avoid neon, large logos, busy patterns, and head-to-toe black, all of which can distract from your faces. Most importantly, dress for comfort and confidence — if your kids feel itchy or you feel "off" in your outfit, it will show. I'll send you a detailed styling guide once you book, and you're always welcome to text me outfit photos before the big day.
01. What should we wear for our family portrait session?
For outdoor sessions, I always recommend shooting during golden hour — that magical window shortly after sunrise or just before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering on everyone. Harsh midday sun tends to wash out skin tones and create unflattering shadows, so that golden glow truly makes a difference in your final images. If you have little ones with early bedtimes, a morning session or a fall/spring date (when sunset comes earlier) is usually a much better fit than a late summer evening. Each season has its own beauty — spring blossoms, lush summer greens, those cozy fall tones everyone loves, and the quiet simplicity of winter light. One thing I'll mention: fall books up incredibly fast, often a year in advance, so if that's your heart's desire, reach out sooner rather than later! Just tell me a little about your family's rhythm and the vibe you're going for, and we'll find the perfect time together.
02. When is the best time to schedule our session?
A standard family session runs about 45 to 90 minutes, with most landing right around an hour. That window gives kids time to warm up, lets us move through a variety of groupings (whole family, parents, siblings, individuals), and leaves room for breaks, snacks, or a quick outfit change if you'd like one. Larger families, multiple generations, or sessions with very young children naturally trend toward the longer end, while smaller families with older kids often wrap up sooner. I never set a strict timer. We'll keep going as long as everyone is having fun and the light is beautiful.
03. How long does a family portrait session last?
Please, please don't worry about this! It's the question I'm asked most, and I promise I've truly seen it all. Sessions with little ones are built around play, not posing: we'll run, tickle, snuggle, and follow your child's lead, so even a wiggly toddler or shy big kid ends up giving us genuine smiles. If someone needs a snack break, a hug, or a moment to reset, we simply pause. Some of my very favorite images come right after a tough moment, when a child curls into a parent for comfort. The most helpful thing you can do is stay relaxed and avoid bribing or warning kids ahead of time; instead, tell them we're going to a park to play with a friend who happens to bring a camera. Trust me on this one! Your kids don't need to be perfect, they just need to be themselves.
04. What if my kids won't cooperate?
Within two weeks of your session, we'll get together for an ordering appointment where you'll view your full gallery and select the images and products you'd love to have. Digital images and printed products are all available for purchase at that appointment, so you can choose exactly what feels right for your family. From there, your digital images will be ready within a week, and any printed products will arrive in about three to four weeks, beautifully packaged and ready to display. A standard one-hour session typically yields around 40 to 60 fully edited, high-resolution images to choose from. Every photo is carefully culled and color-corrected, so you're only seeing the very best from your session, nothing blurry, nothing unflattering, just images you'll be proud to treasure for years to come.
05. When will we receive our photos, and how many will we get?
All three can be beautiful, and the right choice really comes down to your family's personality and what kind of images you want to live with for years to come. Outdoor sessions are wonderful if your kids have lots of energy and you love the look of golden light and natural scenery with seasonal variety. In-home sessions are a great fit for families with very young children who do best in a familiar space and want relaxed, lifestyle-feel images. Studio sessions, though, are my personal favorite for families, and here's why: the clean, timeless environment keeps the focus entirely on your faces and connection, the lighting is perfectly controlled so every image is consistently stunning, and you never have to worry about weather, bugs, or a cranky toddler who's too distracted by squirrels to look at the camera! Studio portraits also tend to be the ones families print largest and treasure longest. If you're not sure which direction feels right, let's chat. I'd love to help you figure out the perfect fit for your family.
06. Should we do an outdoor, in-home, or studio session?
The summer before senior year is the sweet spot for most families, typically June through August, as it gives you plenty of time and leaves room for a relaxed, unhurried experience. That said, fall sessions are absolutely beautiful if you love those warm, cozy tones. Fall books up fast, so don't wait too long to reach out. If your senior is involved in fall sports or activities, we can also plan around their schedule and get something on the calendar before the season kicks into high gear.
01. When should we schedule my senior's portrait session?
For a standard session, three outfits is the magic number. It gives your gallery beautiful variety without spending half the session in a changing room. A great formula is one dressy look, one casual everyday outfit, and one that's uniquely them, whether that's a jersey, a vintage find, or something that nods to their future plans. Encourage your senior to try everything on beforehand to make sure it fits well and feels comfortable, and remind them that solid colors and small prints always photograph better than large bold patterns or busy logos. Accessories like jewelry, hats, and jackets are an easy way to stretch one outfit into two different looks. And feel free to send me outfit photos ahead of time. I love helping seniors plan this part!
02. How many outfits should my senior bring?
Honestly, it depends on your senior and the look they're going for! Some seniors love the idea of coming in with a full glam look, while others prefer a more natural, everyday style. Both can look absolutely beautiful in portraits. The most important thing is that your senior feels confident and like themselves when they walk through the door. If you do decide professional hair and makeup is the right call, I have a trusted artist I love to recommend who works with seniors regularly and knows exactly how to prep for a portrait session. Just ask and I'll be happy to pass along their information!
03. Should we add hair and makeup to the session?
Both are wonderful options, and I'm happy to chat through what might suit your senior best. Outdoor sessions are great for seniors who love a specific location that feels meaningful to them, and who want that natural light, seasonal feel in their images. Studio sessions, though, are my personal recommendation for senior portraits, and here's why: the controlled lighting is consistently stunning, the clean backdrop keeps every bit of focus on your senior's face and personality, and there's no weather, no wind in the hair at the wrong moment, and no distractions. Studio portraits also tend to be the ones families print large and treasure for decades. Many seniors do a combination of both, and we can absolutely talk through that option too.
04. will the session be outdoor or studio?
Within two weeks of the session, we'll schedule an ordering appointment where you and your senior will view the full gallery together and choose your favorite images and products. It's genuinely one of my favorite parts of the whole experience. Watching a family see these images for the first time is something special every single time. Digital images and printed products are available for purchase at that appointment, so you can select exactly what feels right. From there, your digital images will be ready within a week, and any printed products will arrive in about three to four weeks. I'll also send a few sneak-peek images shortly after the session so you have something to share and look forward to right away.
05. When will we see the photos?
This is one of the most common things parents worry about, and I completely understand it. The truth is, most seniors walk in a little stiff and walk out having had a really great time. It just takes a few minutes to warm up. I work hard to make the session feel like a fun hangout rather than a formal photo shoot, with relaxed posing, and a lot of genuine conversation. Your senior doesn't need to know how to pose or have a lot of experience in front of a camera; that's my job. By the end, most kids are shocked by how much they enjoyed it, and parents are usually tearing up a little at the viewing appointment.
06. How involved will my senior be in the session? what if they're nervous?
We are located at 39W250 Herrington Blvd, Suite H1 in Geneva, Illinois. There is plenty of parking on site and the studio is easy to find, but if you ever have any trouble locating us just give me a call and I'll talk you right in!
01. Where is your studio located?
The easiest way to get started is to reach out through the contact form on this website or give me a call directly. We'll have a quick conversation about what you're looking for, find a date that works for your family, and get everything set from there. I try to make the booking process as simple and stress-free as possible because the fun part comes later!
02. How do I book a session?
Yes, a retainer is required in full at the time of booking to reserve your session date. Dates fill up quickly, especially in the fall, so getting that taken care of right away is the best way to make sure you lock in the spot you want.
03. Do you require a deposit to book?
I accept credit cards, personal checks, and cash. If you have any questions about payment ahead of your session or ordering appointment, just ask and I'll be happy to help.
04. What forms of payment do you accept?
It depends! Pets can absolutely add so much heart and personality to portraits, and I love including them when it makes sense. Just reach out ahead of time so we can chat about whether it's a good fit for the type of session you're booking and make sure we plan accordingly. (Some locations don't allow pets!) The more details you share about your furry family member, the better!
05. Can I bring my pet to the session?
Once you book, I'll send over a detailed prep guide covering everything you need to know, from what to wear and what to bring, to what to expect on the day of your session. My goal is for you to show up feeling relaxed, excited, and ready to have fun. And of course, I'm always just a call or email away if any questions come up before we meet!
06. How do I prepare for my session?
