Choosing what to wear for family photos can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! Coordinating outfits without matching can create a harmonious and visually appealing look that highlights each family member’s unique personality. Here are some top tips on coordinating outfits for family photos without everyone wearing the same thing.

Choose a Color Palette

Start with a base of 2-3 colors that complement each other. Think about the location and season of your photo session to guide your color choices. Throw in some neutrals and a pop of color for good measure, and you’re all set! Sometimes clothing will reflect color onto the face and skin, so keep that in mind when looking at brighter color palettes.

Mix Textures and Patterns

Mixing different textures like denim, knit, and cotton can add some serious depth to your photos. Use subtle patterns like stripes or florals, but try to limit them to a couple of family members to keep things from getting too busy. Make sure the patterns complement each other and don’t clash, but don’t be afraid to experiment! You might be surprised!

Highlight Individual Styles

Let each family member’s personality shine through their outfit choice. Kids love to wear what makes them feel awesome, so let them! Throw in some accessories like scarves, hats, or jewelry to add a little personal flair.

Consider the Location

Choose outfits that will stand out against your photo session backdrop. For outdoor shoots, earthy tones or jewel tones can work well, depending on the setting. For indoor sessions, softer, muted tones often look best. Avoid day-glow colors like high-vis orange and neon green.

Family photo sessions can be fun and playful!

Plan Ahead

Lay out all outfits together before the shoot to see how they look as a group. Make sure everyone tries on their outfits in advance to ensure proper fit and comfort. And hey, have a backup plan in case of weather changes or any unforeseen mishaps.

Avoid Logos and Graphics

Steer clear of clothing with large logos or graphic designs that can distract from the overall look. Stick with timeless pieces that won’t date your photos. No one wants to be remembered as the person who wore an Iron Maiden t-shirt with their khakis.

Coordinate Footwear

Make sure shoes are clean and appropriate for the setting. Choose footwear that complements the outfits and doesn’t stand out too much. And remember: just say “no” to Crocs. 🙂

My Favorite Places to Shop

Sometimes you just need an excuse for some retail therapy! Here are some of my favorite local places to fulfill that need:

  • Boutique Baby in St. Charles – Great for matching outfits with littles! Also my favorite place to get coordinating pajama sets. All of their clothes are carefully sourced to be the best for your kiddos!
  • Flair on 3rd in Geneva is my go-to for teens and hip mommas. They are up on current trends without being “trendy” and have modern classy choices.
  • Paula’s Couture Consignment in Batavia is a wonderful treasure where you can find gently used designer brands. It’s a fantastic way of looking tres chic without breaking the bank!
  • Liz & Kate Boutique is another gem in Geneva. I can always find something I love here, and their seasonal color palettes are just beautiful.
  • Stitch Switch in Wheaton is the perfect place to shop for the guys in your life. This consignment shop of designer men’s wear is a great niche, and you just might find something he’ll wear more than once!
  • Iris + Grace is another great boutique children’s clothing store in downtown Geneva. Their clothes are playful, colorful, and downright adorable.
  • Salt & Wilde in Geneva is my favorite place for neutral palettes but still fashion forward. Their clothes have an easy, breezy style perfect for summer sessions!

By following these tips for coordinating outfits for family photos, you’ll create a cohesive look that enhances your family’s natural connection and style. Remember, the goal is to capture the essence of your family, so choose outfits that make everyone feel comfortable and confident. Happy planning!
